As I opened my bedroom drapes this morning, I was amazed and couldn’t help but smile at the beauty of the trees in my backyard. The sun was shining on them and the snow sparkled as though they were wearing a blanket of diamonds. My thoughts turned to thank God for the beauty of the upcoming Advent season and all the hustle and bustle that comes with this joyous time of the year.
We all have memories of Christmas’s past. For me, childhood memories of spending time with siblings, parents and grandparents are at the top of the list. Not to mention putting up that Christmas tree and seeing all those packages under the tree with my name on some of them. In a few weeks, my home will be decorated for Christmas. As I put up the tree, bake the cookies (and of course eat them while they are warm), my heart and mind will remember the true meaning of Christmas as we celebrate the birth of Jesus that happened so long ago in that stable in Bethlehem. The Soup Kitchen held its Thanksgiving dinner on Tuesday, November 14. Many hands joined together to prepare and serve a wonderful holiday meal for 150 people. The next day, many of the same volunteers plus several more, came out to help with the Second Harvest Food Drive. Approximately 360 pounds of food was collected for the St. James Soup Kitchen and Food Cupboard. Money donated will go to Second Harvest to benefit food pantries across the area, including St. James. For every dollar donated, Second Harvest can purchase seventeen dollars worth of food and pass the savings on to all the participating soup kitchens and pantries. Many thanks to all who helped to make t hese events so successful.
