Coadjutor, Bishop: A bishop elected by a diocesan convention to become the bishop of that diocese upon the retirement or resignation of the current diocesan bishop. Distinct from a suffragan bishop in that a bishop coadjutor is elected to become diocesan bishop, while a suffragan bishop is elected only to assist the diocesan bishop.
Collect: A short prayer containing an invocation a petition, and a claiming of the right to appeal in Christ’s name or an ascription of glory to God. For Episcopalians, the word is usually thought of as referring to the variable prayer which is called the Collect for the day and which immediately precedes the reading of the lessons, although a collect or collect-like prayer can appear at other places in the worship or of the church. The name suggests that a number of themes or concerns have been “collected” in such prayers. Colors, Liturgical: The colors of the vestments, altar cloths, and other church decorations which are changed to mark different seasons or occasions. In general, the color of Advent is purple; Christmas is white; Epiphany is white, changing to green after the First Sunday; Lent is purple or natural linen; Holy Week is red; Easter is white; and Pentecost is red on the day and green thereafter, except Trinity Sun day, which is white for weddings and funerals; white for the saints ’ days, or red if the saint is also a martyr; red for ordinations. In some places, Advent is blue; requiems may be purple of black. O ne is advised to consult a liturgical calendar and local custom for the finer points here. Columbarium: A space reserved in a wall of a church building or its grounds where the ashes of dead church members can be placed and noted with a marker. Traditionally grave yards were adjacent to church buildings, but this practice is less and less possible today. The columbarium makes it possible for people’s remains to be in or near their parish churches, reminding us of the communion of the saints, both living and dead. Committal: In the funeral rites, the text used at the graveside , including the ritual casting of earth on the coffin. Happy New Year! We begin the new liturgical year on the first Sunday of Advent, November 27th. That is barely a month away so here is a chance to mark your calendars ahead of time. There will be intergenerational activities on each Sunday of Advent as well as practice for the Christmas pageant on Tuesdays at 3:30 pm. The Sunday schedule is as follows:
November 27—Cookie decorating December 4—A visit from St. Nicholas, making Jesse tree ornaments December 11—The Boar’s Head Dinner, making ginger bread houses December 18—The Christmas Pageant In addition, our Advent study this year for the adults is called the Redemption of Scrooge. It is a 4 part study based on the Dickens’ Christmas classic that will take us from Bah Humbug! to a Blessed Advent and Merry Christmas. Advent is a very rich time of the year and a great way for families and friends to prepare for the Christmas season. As you read this article, you are probably wondering why I would be writing an article about the St. James After Dark program to appear in the Nov. newsletter? As you know, we are rapidly approaching Advent season. We have many events scheduled for our church calendar for this busy time of the year. In addition, it is our intent to be working on a schedule for classes to be offered for the St. James After Dark program to begin Feb. 6-9 or 10(depending on number of classes offered). We have had a great deal of success with this program the past two winters. It is nice to get out of the house when that old cabin-fever seems to creep-up after all the festivities of the holiday season have passed.
This program is part of our Outreach Program. We encourage members of the congregation, as well as others in the community to bring their talents forward to be shared within the community of Titusville and surrounding areas. If you have never offered a course or attended a class in the past, please do not hesitate to do so. Our target is to have a schedule of courses to be offered within the next few weeks. Details regarding registration for a specific course will be provided at a later date. Your assistance is needed to promote this program and to continue the success of St. James After Dark program. November is a time of giving and thanksgiving. The St.James Soup Kitchen is thankful for all who have volunteered their time on Tuesdays and all who have donated to help make this ministry possible. Recently the Soup Kitchen and Food Cupboard received a grant from The United Way, made possible by the Land O Lakes corporation. Over the years, God's blessings upon the Soup Kitchen have come from the Titusville community through many individuals and organizations. What a wonderful reason to offer thanksgiving.
The Soup Kitchen will hold its annual Thanksgiving meal on Tuesday, November 15. Turkey and all the trimmings will be served during the noonday meal. This dinner is always well attended. Extra tables will be set up and expanded serving times may be necessary. Although we are no longer able to have deliveries and take-outs to the general public, local churches and service groups can arrange to pick up take-outs for the sick and shut-in by calling our church office by 10 AM. on any Tuesday. The day after our Thanksgiving meal, on Wednesday, November 16 is the annual food and donation drive sponsored by WICU and Second Harvest. This will take place in the Family Video parking lot and all proceeds benefit the St. James Food Cupboard and the Titusville Food Bank. Donations of canned goods or money can be dropped off any time that day at the collection site. Volunteers are needed to help direct donors into the parking lot and to help receive the donations. St. James is responsible for staffing from 10 AM to 2 PM. Any amount of time you are able to contribute would be a great help. This is a good chance to invite a friend along to help with a worthy cause and get to know more regarding what St. James is all about. There is a sign up sheet in the Parish Hall. On October 11th. the Soup Kitchen welcomed Titusville's new police chief, Harold Minch and Sgt. Bud Root for lunch. The Titusville Police Dept. would like to be more involved with the community. The two enjoyed visiting with the Soup Kitchen congregation and were well received. Many had questions for the new chief. Since it was Bag Day, the chief volunteered to pass out food bags. We were fortunate that he could stay to help. The Food Cupboard gave out a record 70 bags of food. Wow! The chief hopes to volunteer on a regular basis.
